When we think of Demons, A demon is generally defined as an evil or malevolent supernatural entity. The term “demon” has broadly been used in Scripture for those angels who are antagonistic towards God's purposes.
The Hebrew word for Demon is “Shed” in the singular, and Demons is “Shedim” in the plural. When did Demons come into existence in the Bible?
How did these evil entities become demons? Do we have a Bible verse that says, on this day, demons came into existence? No, we don’t, but we do have inference.
And that is in the book of Job 1:6 and 2:1, which mentions the sons of God, the Hebrew is ‘bene Elohim’. It refers to angelic beings who came before the presence of God.
Satan is considered one of them because he was among those angelic beings, even though he fell from his original state as Lucifer, the guardian of God’s throne.
Satan’s name means ‘adversary’; he has access to God’s presence, but not to the third heaven. He will lose that access in the tribulation period when he is cast out (Rev 12:10). Satan and demons have control of the first and second heavens (Dan 4:12; Psalm 19:1-3).
The book of Revelation describes him as the “accuser of the brethren”. He accuses you and I before God daily. But we have an advocate on our behalf, which is Jesus.
1 John 2:1 says if we sin, we have an advocate, one who pleads on our behalf, a legal representative who fights on our behalf. It is a verb that means to actively argue in favor of someone.
We have a verses that would give us a clue as to when these sons of God came into existence, and that is Job 38:4 and 7, where God challenges Job as to where he was when God laid the foundation of the earth.
Job 38:7 tells us that the morning stars (angels), sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy. When did the sons of God sing and shout for joy?
Verse 4 says God laid the foundations of the earth (creation). Then, in verse 7, it says the sons of God shouted for joy. Angels were already in existence before the creation of the earth.
Angels rejoiced after the creation of the earth. So when looking at Genesis 1:1, In the beginning, (angels were already in existence), God created the heavens and the earth.
When did Lucifer fall and become Satan? Lucifer means “light-bearer”, or morning star, derived from the Latin and comes from Isaiah 14:12-14. The five “I will’s”.
Ezekiel 28:13-15 shows Lucifer’s original position as the anointed cherub who was guarding God’s Throne until iniquity was found in him, when he wanted it all in Isaiah 14:12-14.
Let me throw something at you here. You and I were created with freewill. Plain and simple. Angels in the beginning were also created with Freewill as will.
The difference between mortal men and angels is that we can change our minds anytime we want. An angel, however, he had only one opportunity to exercise his free will.
Once that angel exercised his free will, they were locked into that decision forever. Angels who decided to follow Satan in his rebellion became known as demons or devils. They kept not their first estate but left their own habitation according to Jude 1:6.
Good angels who did not follow Satan in his rebellion were locked into their decision to remain holy angels. These angels did not leave their first estate. Daniel 7:10 and Revelation 5:11 are parallel passages.
The Jewish Prophet Daniel and the Jewish Apostle John saw angels, ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands. That is an innumerable number of angels.
Ten thousand times ten thousand equals one-hundred million, plus angels. In Revelation 12:1-4, we see Satan’s attempt to annihilate the Jewish people from the earth. Satan will lose his access to God and be cast to earth in an attempt to destroy the Jewish people.
Revelation 12:4 says his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and did cast them into the earth. A third part of the stars are fallen angels who followed Satan in his original rebellion.
I cannot be dogmatic about this, but let’s play with a few numbers. We know 10,000 x 10,000 is 100,000,000. And a third of fallen angels followed Satan in his rebellion in Revelation 12:4.
A third of one-hundred million is 33 million. 333 thousand, 333.3 That is a lot of demons. I cannot be 100% sure that is how many demons are in the world, but the number is staggering.
What are the activities of demons in the Bible? Several activities in the Scriptures may involve demons. Some believe they cause physical disease or mental suffering.
Not all mental orders are demonic in origin. Demons tempt people to commit immoral practices and carry out heinous acts. They originate and propagate false doctrine.
The Bible calls it the doctrines of devils or demons. People in the Bible were possessed by demons, like the man with a legion of demons in Mark 5 and Luke 8.
Although demons are committed to doing evil, God will use them to accomplish His plan at the end of the age. Revelation 9:11 says they have a leader, Abaddon (Heb: destruction, Apollyon, Gr. destroyer).
That is Satan. At the end of the 70th Week of Prophecy, the Antichrist and False Prophet will be cast into the lake of fire (Rev 19:19-20). Satan will be confined to the bottomless pit (Rev 20:2-7).
Yeshua will reign for 1000 Years in the Millennial Kingdom. The question is, where are demons during this time when Jesus, the Jewish Messiah, reigns from Jerusalem?
Based on Isaiah 24:21-23, demons are also confined at this time. If they were not confined, there would be not be 1000 years of global peace. Satan and all demons must be incarcerated.
This is why we are told to take up the whole armour of God to stand against the wiles or schemes of the devil (Eph 6:11). Man is not the enemy, though he is deceived by the unseen enemy we fight against (Eph 6:12).
We wrestle against 1, Principalities (unseen rulers), 2, Powers (authorities), 3, rulers (mortal world-rulers), 4, Spiritual Wickedness (unseen wicked spiritual beings), fallen angels, and Satan himself.
Ephesians 6:13-17 gives us the formula to combat this wicked world. The armour protects the vital body parts against incoming strikes. The breastplate of righteousness is holy character.
Feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, bringing the gospel to the world, the Shield of Faith to ward off incoming attacks and quench the fiery darts of the wicked.
The Helmet of Salvation and the Sword of the Spirit is the Bible itself (2 Tim 2:15). We must arm ourselves with God’s Word and prayer daily.
Why? Jesus is coming soon! The Rapture of the Church is around the corner. Souls are at stake, and the god of this world continues to deceive, and demons are in force in and around the earth.
The stage is being set as the perilous times stage continues to intensify, and wickedness abounds. Humanity is on the cusp of the final 70th Week of Daniel’s Prophecy.
